Victorian chaser Dewana Star is set to be among the favourites for Thursday’s Group 3 Devonport Chase Final (at Hobart, 461m) after delivering a scorching heat run in Hobart on Thursday night that sent a clear warning to his rivals.
Dewana Star, the son of Hooked On Scotch and Dewana Classic, delivered an outstanding performance in his first interstate campaign, taking out his heat in 25.50 from box 2 with a 3-3/4 length victory for trainer Brendan Dewan.
It matched the fastest time of the four Devonport Chase heats, alongside the Mick Stringer-trained Appenzell.
Caretaker trainer Anthony Bullock said he was especially impressed by the promising youngster’s performance.
“It was the right call to send the dog over early, trialling last week, and help him settle in,” Bullock said.
“It’s the first time this dog has been away from home, and after only being around three or four other dogs, he’s now working with a big team. I think he can only improve as we head into the final, and the draw is definitely a bonus.”
He lands the allocation of box 1 in the $30,000-to-the-winner feature, giving his chances a boost.
In just 13 starts for the Dozus Two Syndicate, Dewana Star has notched up 9 wins and 3 minor placings, quickly rising to group race class with a win in the Group 3 Northern Districts Cup and a runner-up finish in the Group 1 Silver Chief.
“This was the perfect chance to get the dog used to different surroundings if they plan to travel with him,” Anthony said.
“The field he’ll face next week is the sort of quality Dewana Star would encounter going interstate. He’s not two yet and, with only 13 starts, it’s a big ask to come across and do it. The draw is very crucial, but he’s got a very good chance.”
Tasmanian Hall of Fame trainer Mick Stringer has his sights set on more silverware at the Summer Racing Festival, with three top contenders, Gold Cup winner Appenzell, Young Star, and Verdi – all flying off impressive heat wins.
David Geall is holding on for another shot at success in his Apple Isle campaign, with Hobart Thousand champion Slick Badger and Lakeside Cup winner Barefoot Elsa both finishing runner-up in their respective heats to secure spots in the final.
Red Day (Robin Stocks) and Two Girls (Glenn Howlett) were among the local contenders who qualified for the field.
